What is DHEA?
DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands (located just above the kidneys) as well as by the brain and the skin. The body uses DHEA to produce the sex hormones testosterone and oestrogen. DHEA levels begin to decrease from the late twenties, and it may be beneficial to replace DHEA if levels become low. Apart from aging and menopause, stress and smoking can contribute to reduced DHEA levels.
Symptoms of DHEA deficiency:
• Decreased energy • Irritability • Decreased muscle strength • Joint soreness • Difficulty dealing with stress • Weight gain • Increased risk of infection
What are the benefits of DHEA?
• Increases feeling of well-being and quality of life (more energy, less infections, improved mood) • Increases muscle strength and lean body mass • Activates the immune system • Decreases joint stiffness • Improves sleep • Helps sugar levels stay normal • Elevates growth hormone levels
